Awards and Accolades

AORN Pittsburgh Chapter Past Award Recipients

Every year AORN awards its highest honor to a member whose work and accomplishments have had global implications on perioperative nursing in the areas of practice, education, and research or support of research.

In 2016, the Award for Excellence in Perioperative Nursing to Kathleen Gaberson, PhD, RN, CNOR, CNE, ANEF. Kathleen received her award at the Opening Ceremony of the AORN Global Surgical Conference & Expo 2016.

Kathleen shared her excitement and appreciation for the honor:

What does being the 2016 recipient of the Award for Excellence mean to you?

I’m humbled by the realization that my peers thought me worthy of this prestigious award. The award is affirmation of the value of my achievements in the areas of perioperative nursing education and perioperative nursing research. Receiving this honor is the pinnacle of my career as a perioperative nurse.

Why is your AORN membership important to you?

AORN represents the interests of all perioperative nurses. We collaborate with other organizations to ensure that our collective voice is heard and that we are in positions to influence health care policy. AORN provides practice support to perioperative nurses to promote safe patient care and achieve optimal patient outcomes. The strength of our cooperative efforts accomplishes more than I could do alone

How has your AORN membership supported your career?

I’ve had many opportunities to obtain continuing nursing education required to maintain my nursing license and certification. I have developed leadership skills through my work on various national AORN committees, boards, and task groups and as a delegate to many AORN Congresses. As an academic nurse, it was important to my career development that I carry out funded research, disseminate my research results, and speak at conferences in my field. AORN supported these activities with research grants, opportunities to publish in our prestigious AORN Journal, and invitations to present at the Surgical Conference & Expo and other conferences.

What makes you most proud to be an AORN member?

I’ve been a member of AORN since 1983, and I have always valued AORN’s role as advocate for perioperative patient safety. AORN’s guidelines for perioperative patient care and its government and legislative affairs activities help nurses to achieve the best in safe patient care and improve the environment in which that care is provided. I’m proud to be a member of an organization that consistently strives to shape the future of perioperative nursing and patient care.

What are you most looking forward to at the Surgical Conference & Expo this year?

Networking with friends and colleagues, and learning new things in the education sessions and the Exhibit Hall.

AORN Surgical Conference and Expo

The AORN Global Surgical Conference and Expo 2018 will take place from March 24th – March 28th, 2018. These 4 days will consist of:

  • Mandatory meetings we must attend to become familiar with AORN legislature and changes proposed with AORN Guidelines for Perioperative Practice. We will then vote on these changes which will affect all of the national AORN chapters.
  • There will be educational sessions scheduled to attend from early morning to early evening. It’s exciting to look at what is offered each day and formulate your own schedule with which ones you want to attend.
  • AORN has planned well known speakers to present motivational and life changing events they have experienced.
  • Usually there will be an evening dinner meeting sponsored by a well-known surgical company. They always have a very interesting topic.
